A 17-year-old footballer is awake and responsive after being placed in an induced coma following an incident during a grand final in Adelaide.

Angle Vale’s Henry Nau was airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital after being hurt in the clash with Two Wells on Saturday.

Nau woke from his coma on Sunday morning, according to his father.

“Thanks for the support everyone is giving Henry and us as parents,” Garry Nau wrote.

“Henry remained overnight in an induced coma. He was woken up this morning and started responding.

“At this point, we are waiting on what the doctors will tell us next.

“While his initial scans were positive, Henry is still in ICU at the RAH.

“Thanks again for all the kind words and wishes. We will try to update as we know more.

“Our priority is his health and hopefully speedy recovery.”

It remains unclear exactly how Nau was injured.

The match was described as violent by spectators, with several yellow and red cards reportedly handed out to players.

Police opened an investigation after reviewing footage and speaking with the clubs but did not move forward with any charges.

“We would like to thank our trainers and everyone that provided initial first aid and the SA ambulance service,” Angle Vale club president Simon Selley said.

“Yesterday’s grand final day was unfortunately marred by careless acts of violence.

“Angle Vale Football and Netball Club does not condone this behaviour and will be seeking answers on how this is continuously allowed to occur in junior football.”

Adelaide Plains Football League said an investigation would be conducted after Angle Vale lodged an official report.

Two Wells, who won the game 11.9 (75) to 6.8 (44), urged members “to avoid spreading unverified details or speculation” on social media.

“Our primary concern remains the wellbeing of the child and his family,” the club said.
