A police helicopter was called in to scour the water for any sign of the plane or any of the passengers on board.

The rescue efforts have been hampered by rough seas, making it almost impossible to launch rescue boats.

The crash occurred at a very popular sightseeing spot with an airstrip at Goolwa and a number of private runways on nearby Hindmarsh Island.
