A woman has been charged with attempted murder after a man was stabbed at a home in Port Augusta, about 309km from Adelaide.

Emergency crews rushed to Higginson St just after 3.30pm on Saturday following reports of a violent assault.

Police said a 33-year-old local man suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital before being airlifted to Adelaide in a critical condition.

A 47-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with attempted murder.

She was refused bail and will front Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Tuesday, after the public holiday on Monday.

Detectives and forensic officers combed the property as investigations continue.

Police have confirmed the pair are known to each other and say the attack was not random.
