In CCTV footage, the man can be seen appearing to reach for one of the officer’s holsters before he is restrained on the ground and sprayed with capsicum spray.

One of the officers suffered a cut to his head, police said.

The 25-year-old from Blake View was charged with assaulting an emergency service worker.

He was released on bail and will appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court in December.

Police Association of South Australia president Wade Burns said the two officers volunteered to be rostered on to help with the low numbers of staff working in the CBD area.

“It’s only due to the excellent work of our police members that they’ve prevented what could’ve been an absolute disaster,” Burns said.

“It’s incidents like these that cause police officers to look at alternative employment.”
