A surfer has driven himself to hospital after being bitten twice by a shark at a well-known surf spot off South Australia’s coast.

The attacked occurred at The Sewer surf break in D’Estrees Bay, on Kangaroo Island’s southern shoreline.

The shark was reported to be a bronze whaler chasing a seal through the bay, according to a public report submitted to the South Australian Shark Watch Alert (SWSA).

But the seal seemingly used the surfer as a decoy and the shark bit the man, aged in his 50s, twice before retreating.

Locals have been notified of the incident, and authorities are urging caution in the area.

Bronze whalers, also known as copper sharks, are commonly found in southern Australian waters and can grow up to 3.3m in length.

While generally not aggressive toward humans, they have been involved in several documented attacks.

The surfer is in hospital undergoing surgery and remains in a stable condition.
