Three confirmed dead as light plane crashes into ocean off South Australia’s south coast

The aircraft crashed into the ocean on Friday afternoon.

A light plane has crashed into the ocean near Goolwa at the Murray mouth, with rescue crews responding to the emergency after witnesses reported the incident just before 4.

The aircraft crashed into the ocean at Long Bay, near Goolwa South, about 4.20pm on Friday.

Police have confirmed a 57-year-old man from Morphett vale, a 19-year-old man from Pasadena and an 18-year-old man from Freeling were killed in the crash.

A police helicopter was called in to scour the water for the aircraft, which has now been transported to shore.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will join police investigators at the crash site on Saturday.

The rescue efforts have been hampered by rough seas, making it almost impossible to launch rescue boats.

The crash occurred at a very popular sightseeing spot with an airstrip at Goolwa and a number of private runways on nearby Hindmarsh Island.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
