A mother and her young son are tonight fighting for life in hospital after a shocking head on crash involving a B-double in the state's south-east.

A mother and her four-year-old son have sustained life-threatening injuries after the car they were in collided head-on with a truck on the Riddoch Hwy in South Australia’s southeast.

The crash happened at 9.30am on Thursday in Joanna, just south of Naracoorte.

South Australia Police said three car passengers were rushed to hospital.

Two of them, a 28-year-old Naracoorte woman and her four-year-old son, have life-threatening injuries.

A third passenger, an eight-year-old girl, “miraculously escaped injury”, police said.

The driver of the truck, a 59-year-old Limecoast man, sustained minor injuries and was also transported to hospital.

Police said the impact of the crash left the two vehicles more than 100 metres apart.
