Two peanut butter products sold at Coles have been urgently recalled after being found to contain a toxic substance that could make people sick.

The recall, issued on Monday, applies to Coles Smooth Peanut Butter 1kg and Coles Crunchy Peanut Butter 1kg, sold nationally in-store and online between May 1 and June 30.

“The recall is due to Biotoxin (aflatoxin) contamination,” NSW Food Authority said.

The affected batch has a best before date of February 5, 2027.

In a statement, Coles said aflatoxins — which are naturally occurring toxins produced by certain moulds — can cause illness if consumed.

Those who purchased the affected products can return them to any Coles store for a full refund.
