GeoScience Australia said there were 1408 reports from people who felt the quake, however, there have been no reported incidents or damage.

“Quite the alarm for Melburnians this morning. A 4. 1-magnitude earthquake at 3:49am, the epicentre at Woods Point,” McCormack said, speaking to Monique Wright.

“The quake was about 10km deep, say experts, so not strong enough to cause likely damage, no reports of damage.”

People took to social media to say they were woken from their slumber with their house shaking and windows rumbling for only a couple of seconds.

“Woke me up in Badger Creek,” one woman said.

“Felt it in Don Valley, windows rattling woke me up!” another wrote.

“Front door rattled like crazy. Thought it was a home invasion,” a third added.
