A lithium battery fire destroyed a Caroline Springs home in Melbourne's west, forcing a family of five to evacuate while they were sleeping.

A family home in Melbourne’s West has been destroyed after a suspected incident involving a lithium-ion battery.

Firefighters rushed to a two-storey home on The Grange in Caroline Springs shortly after 7.30pm on Sunday, following reports of a home fully engulfed in flames.

Five people were able to escape the home, one with burns to the face and hands, before the fire was brought under control an hour later.

The fire caused extensive damage to the house and its contents, a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said. The roof of the property also collapsed.

Over 30 firefighters were on the scene and were able to save neighbouring properties from catching alight.

Crews suspect the blaze may have been initiated by lithium-ion batteries that were charging in the garage, however fire investigators will visit the scene on Monday to confirm the cause of the fire.
