A group of about seven men ambushed the victims in front of families and late-night diners on the popular restaurant strip.

CCTV footage of the incident has now emerged, but the attack was so brutal that authorities have chosen not to release all of it.

The victims, a 20-year-old local man and an 18-year-old from New South Wales, eventually managed to escape their attackers but were left with critical injuries.

The attackers fled the scene, but police are now determined to track them down.

“Really, if you carry any edge weapon without any exemption whatsoever, you’re going down three paths,” a Victoria Police commander Tim Tully said.

“You’re either going to jail, you’re going to hospital, or you’re going to a cemetery. It’s as simple as that.”

The attack comes after Victoria’s controversial machete amnesty ended on November 30, meaning anyone caught with such a weapon now faces two years in jail.

Police are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward.
