A stolen BMW ploughed into the Melbourne store sparking a fire.

A group of hapless thieves have attempted a shambolic ram-raid robbery with one of them running from the scene on fire.

Detectives are investigating the ram raid and fire at a Brunswick cycling store in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The offenders used a stolen black BMW X5 to ram the garage door of a business on Lygon Street at about 2.55am.

It is believed the offenders used the stolen car to ram the door two or three times, before jumping out of the BMW and entering the store.

The ramming and impacts then led to a fire inside the business before police confirmed that one of the offenders was spotted fleeing the scene with one of their arms on fire.

The offenders left the stolen vehicle behind and were last seen running towards Nicholson Street.

The fire caused significant damage to the building.

It is unclear if anything was stolen from the store at this stage.

Investigators believe the BMW was stolen from a Heatherton address on October 3.
