Elderly woman in serious condition after alleged hit-and-run on busy Brunswick street

The woman stopped in the middle of the road to try and cross when she was allegedly struck by a car which failed to stop.

An elderly woman has been seriously injured in an alleged hit-and-run in Melbourne’s north.

A woman was walking across Sydney Rd near Barkley St in Brunswick on Wednesday about 4.15pm, when she stopped in the middle of the road waiting for the traffic to clear so she could continue crossing.

Police allege a small white Volkswagen hatch travelling north hit the woman and failed to stop.

The driver of the car allegedly continued along Sydney Rd before coming to a stop on Wilson Ave.

Police said he was last seen walking towards the railway station.

The 71-year-old woman was taken to hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

“Police seized the vehicle and are yet to locate and speak to the driver,” a statement read.

The driver is described as being in his 20s, with dark hair.

He was wearing a black jacket and black shorts with a red stripe.
