“The family are actively assisting police with their investigation and are providing details of our knowledge of the area and property,” the family member said.

“We are devastated, heartbroken and sickened by the loss of two police officers.

“Decades ago, Dezi detached himself from us in both name and ideology.

Freeman, previously known as Desmond Filby, is considered a so-called sovereign citizen by authorities.

His wife and children presented themselves safely to a police station on Tuesday night, but Freeman remains at large as of Thursday afternoon.

Two bangs were heard from Freeman’s property as police closed in on Thursday afternoon.

It is not yet clear whether they were tactical flash shots used to flush him out or actual gunfire.

Police have urged Freeman to surrender, with Superintendent Brett Kahan saying during a press conference: “If Dezi Freeman is watching this, ring triple-0 and we will support a surrender plan that keeps options open.”

Porepunkah, a town of about 1000 in northeast Victoria, was placed on lockdown following the incident.

Superintendent Brett Kahan said on Thursday that residents did not need to stay indoors but should remain vigilant.

Porepunkah Primary School was briefly locked down on Tuesday, remained closed on Wednesday, and reopened on Thursday.

Freeman is described as Caucasian, 183cm tall, medium build, with short dark hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing dark green (khaki) tracksuit pants, a dark green rain jacket, brown Blundstone boots, and reading glasses.
