The sprinkler caused “extensive flooding” to several platforms and both Melbourne Central and Flagstaff Railway stations had to be evacuated as a result.

It was initially believed the damaged water pipe was an act of vandalism however CCTV footage showed the couple were engaging in “amorous” relations at the time of the incident, Victoria’s Transport Minister Danny Pearson confirmed last week.

Fencing has now been installed around the stairwell and sprinkler to prevent a similar incident from reoccurring.
