A child has died in hospital several days after being hit by a car while riding an e-scooter in Melbourne.

The boy, 12, was struck by a car in Mill Park on Wednesday evening at the intersection of Betula Avenue and Childs Road.

The child was taken to hospital in a critical condition but has since died, police said on Sunday night.

The driver of the car, a 34-year-old Greensborough man, stopped at the scene to assist.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Any witnesses or anyone who has footage of the incident are urged to come forward.
