Bystanders have managed to overpower a man who allegedly opened fire after two cars crashed at a Melbourne intersection on Monday.

Police say the man is now in custody after the frightening incident in Doncaster at about 11am.

It is believed the driver of one of two vehicles that collided near the intersection of Williamsons and Manningham roads left his car and fired a gun.

Members of the public managed to overpower the man and hold him until police arrived.

The 32-year-old man, who sustained minor injuries, was arrested and is currently in police custody.

Officers located a firearm at the scene which was seized.

No one else was injured.

The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene and will be interviewed by police.

The investigation remains ongoing.
