A man was killed when he was hit by a train at Middle Footscray Railway Station, 5km west of the CBD, about 4.50am on Thursday.

Train services are now on hold in Melbourne due to the incident, which is not believed to be suspicious.

“The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene,” Victoria Police said.

Investigations are ongoing, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Bus services were ordered just before 5am to replace trains on the Sunbury Line between Nth Melbourne to Sunshine while emergency services attended the scene at the station on the line, Metro Trains said in an alert.

The Sunbury, Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong lines were all suspended due to an unfolding emergency operations and ongoing investigation, Victoria Department of Transport and Planning said.

“Trains will continue to operate between Sunshine and Sunbury, with delays likely,” it said.

Melbourne commuters have been urged to “allow extra travel time and consider alternative transport,” Metro Trains said.

Regional passengers were warned they will need to allow an extra 90 minutes for their travel.

Coaches will replace trains on the Bendigo Line between Sunbury and Southern Cross, and on the Ballarat Line between Caroline Springs and Southern Cross.

There will also be no Geelong Line trains operating between Wyndham Vale and Southern Cross, with coaches replacing the service between Wyndham Vale and Werribee to connect with Metro Trains services.

“Motorists are asked to be vigilant for extra pedestrians and buses around train stations on the Sunbury Line,” Victoria Department of Transport and Planning said.
