Melbourne bomb hoax: Man charged after allegedly making explosive threat, locking down St Kilda East school

The bomb squad has been deployed, a school has been placed into a lockdown and a man has now been charged in Melbourne.

A man has been charged after allegedly making explosive threats outside a Melbourne school, which sparked a lockdown and bomb squad deployment.

The 45-year-old man allegedly made the threats outside a school in St Kilda East on Tuesday afternoon, around 30 minutes before school was set to wrap up for the day.

Officers raced to Dandenong Road around 2.45pm.

The man was discovered with a backpack while allegedly making the explosive threats.

Victoria Police said the school where the man was making the alleged threats was locked down while the bomb squad was brought in.

“The Bomb Response Unit attended and assessed the backpack, with no suspicious devices located,” A Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“The man was charged with bomb hoax, trespass, unlawful assault, possess drugs and possess a controlled weapon.”

Victoria Police said the incident is not believed to be religiously or ideologically motivated.

The 45-year-old man was released on bail and is expected to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 16 September.
