Melbourne man injured after shooting himself with homemade gun

A man has been hospitalised after a bizarre incident in which he accidentally shot himself with a homemade gun.

Emergency services responded to reports of a shot being fired in Dandenong in Melbourne’s southeast early on Monday morning.

Police located a 37-year-old man with a gunshot wound in an alleyway off Scott St in Dandenong shortly after 1am. Nearby officers found a homemade firearm.

Police say the man, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, is believed to have accidentally shot himself.

In a statement, Victoria Police said: “It is believed the man accidentally discharged the firearm himself. Police will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Police have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information to contact Crime Stoppers.
