Police are investigating the mysterious death of a man who was found critically injured on a road in Melbourne’s southeast after leaving his motel to go for a walk.

The 52-year-old man had been staying at a motel in Dandenong with his partner when he left to go for a walk around 2.03am on Friday, February 28.

Police say the man suffered from leg cramping and often went for walks to help the pain.

He had gone for a walk several hours earlier about 7pm on Thursday, with CCTV showing him leaving the motel and returning about 40 minutes later.

The man was seen on CCTV leaving the motel around 2am, with the majority of his walk captured on camera.

He was last seen at 2.11am “alive and well” police say, however he never returned to the motel.

Several hours later about about 6.55am, a passerby found the man seriously injured on Fifth Ave.

He was taken hospital where he later died from head injuries on Saturday, March 1.

His partner, a 50-year-old woman, reported him missing when she realised he had not returned.

The man was captured on CCTV leaving the motel for a walk about 7pm on Thursday, February 27. He returned about 40 minutes later.

Investigators have been unable to locate any footage showing the man’s final movements or how he received the fatal injuries.

Detective Inspector Rob Nazaretian appealed for anyone with any footage such as CCTV, dashcam or Ring cam, to come forward.

There were also a number of people captured on CCTV around 2am, who may have walked past the man, who police are keen to speak to.

“At this point in time investigators have been unable to definitively establish the circumstances which led to this man’s death, not discounting the possibility of a physical assault or some other cause,” Nazaretian said.

“If you were one of those people in the area at the time or you have CCTV or dashcam footage which has not already been provided to police, please, we encourage you to come forward now.”

The man was last seen wearing camouflage patterned pants, runners, a cap, and was carrying a bag.

He walked with a noticeable limp.

Anyone with any information should contact Crime Stoppers.
