A 56-year-old man, believed to be a former Australian Defence Force soldier, began shooting at detectives who returned fire.

No officers were injured.

He then fled the scene sparking a massive manhunt through nearby paddocks and properties that lasted more than two hours.

About 5pm the man was found with non-life-threatening injuries and taken to hospital.

He has now been charged with a series of offences including discharging a firearm at police officers, reckless conduct endangering life and five counts of assaulting emergency workers.

The man was remanded in custody to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court in January.
