Port Melbourne: Home invader surprised by 13yo girl arrested in backyard

A young girl has surprised an intruder inside her house after he allegedly stole a mobile phone from under a bed pillow.

South Melbourne police arrested a man following an alleged aggravated burglary in Port Melbourne on Sunday night.

Police will allege a 27-year-old gained access to a residence where a man and a child were sleeping on Clifford Street at about 11.40pm.

It is believed the man entered the residence via an unlocked front door and stole a mobile phone from under the victim’s pillow whilst he slept.

The 13-year-old girl raised the alarm and police swiftly arrived on scene and successfully arrested the man in the rear yard of the property.

No one was physically injured.

A 27-year-old Redbank man was interviewed and is expected to be charged on summons for aggravated burglary and theft.
