Two Victorian grandparents are now multimillionaires after discovering a life-changing ticket stuck to their fridge door.

The grandparents from Brighton are now $20 million richer after holding a division one winning entry in Thursday’s Powerball draw.

There were four division one winners in the draw, but when the final unregistered ticketholders failed to come forward last week, Powerball staff had to wait for them to check their ticket and come forward.

“We’ve both been really busy, so we just forgot to check it,” the couple said.

“This is unbelievable. We had no idea, and this whole time the ticket was just sitting on our fridge.”

The couple said that winning the large sum was “insane” and that they were “in shock”.

Despite the pair purchasing a QuickPick ticket, they said the winning numbers contained some of their lucky numbers, as well as family birthday and anniversaries.

“It was meant to be,” they said.

The lucky grandparents said they were planning on looking after their children and grandchildren with the prize money, as well as planning to buy a “little house” for themselves.

“We’ve worked really hard all our lives. We’ll look after our children and grandchildren, and we’ll be able to buy a little house,” they said.

“We have bought tickets on and off for years. (We) can’t believe it.”

The pair said they’ve had a “radical change of plans for the day” and were unsure if they will keep on working or if they would use the money to retire.

“It will take a long time for this to sink in,” they said.

The winning entry was purchased from East Brighton News agency, with owner Sajjad Sadeghi Goorbandi saying he was over the moon to sell a division one winning ticket.

“I can’t believe it. This is the best news,” he said. “This is actually the first division one winning ticket we’ve sold since I took over ownership two years ago.”
