Smoke warning issued after car driven into Greenvale garage in Melbourne and set alight

Melbourne is waking to its coldest day of the year with the temperature dropping below zero in some parts of the city.

A car has crashed into the garage of a house in Melbourne’s north, burst into flames and caused a serious house fire.

The vehicle smashed into the property on Arkose St in Greenvale at 3.45am on Tuesday.

It either caught fire or was set alight and the driver fled the scene.

The fire caused moderate damage to the single-storey brick home and adjoining properties were evacuated as a precaution.

A male resident and his five-year-old daughter were inside at the time and escaped with minor injuries.

The fire was brought under control in just over 30 minutes and a community safety warning was issued for thick black smoke that blanketed the area

Fire crews deemed the blaze suspicious with calls to emergency services reporting the car was set alight.

Police are investigating and anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact them.
