A man has been arrested after a major police operation unfolded around a home in Melbourne’s south-west where officers believe he was barricaded inside with a firearm.

“The man was arrested by members of the special operations group, without incident about 10.20am,” the force said in a statement provided to The Nightly.

The incident triggered a swift response from the squad and the special operations group, with authorities earlier urging residents on Hicks Street, Melbourne Road, Birmingham Street and The Avenue to stay inside their homes as crews worked to apprehend the man.

Police confirmed the area is being cleared and there is no ongoing risk to the community.

On Thursday in Bendigo, a homeless man was allegedly stabbed in a violent late-night attack.

Police allege the 41-year-old man was attacked by a group of six offenders, believed the be teenagers, following an altercation on Bath Lane.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 9pm after the injured man walked into a nearby sports bar on Hargreaves Street with suspected stab wounds.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
