The Melbourne Jewish community has been left shaken after a vehicle displaying a “Happy Chanukah” sign was firebombed in the driveway of a home in St Kilda East.

Emergency services were called to the property on Balaclava Road around 2.50am on Thursday.

No one was inside the car at the time of the incident and the occupants of the house were evacuated as a precaution, Victoria Police confirmed.

The car reportedly belongs to a local rabbi.

Community Security Group, a Jewish community safety organisation, said the car was firebombed in a statement shared on social media.

“CSG Victoria advises that just after 03:00 this morning, a car with a Chanukiah on the roof was firebombed in St Kilda East,” the post read.

“No community members were harmed. Victoria Police attended the scene and we remain in close contact with them.”

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 3am on Thursday.

Just 11 days after the Bondi Beach massacre claimed the lives of 15 innocent people, the group has urged the community to remain vigilant.

Police say they have identified a person who may be able to assist with their investigation.

Anyone with any dashcam vision/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
