He was rushed by ambulance to Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries to his hands, head and torso.

Police say a group of teenagers had jumped out of a vehicle and approached the victim armed with “weapons” in a laneway, just off Lake St.

The suspects fled the area by the time police arrived at the shopping complex.

One witness told 7NEWS he ran to his car to get a first aid kit in an effort to help the teen who was “in and out of consciousness”.

“I was trying to keep him awake and alive and he was in a pretty critical condition,” he said.

“From the wounds it was larger than a kitchen knife maybe a machete size.

“I didn’t see the incident happen ... but it was definitely bigger than a fishing knife.”

The scene was cordoned off by officers who remained at the scene into the night, picking up a pile of bloodied clothes as evidence.

“Police are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and investigations are ongoing,” Victoria Police said.

The group of teens took off in the vehicle towards Commercial Rd.
