Victorian Surf Life Savers have had their busiest day in 20 years, as the state sweltered for back-to-back days. It's Melbourne’s hottest weekend in more than a decade, but relief is just hours away.

Two children have been injured, including one seriously, while riding an inflatable biscuit on a lake at the NSW-Victoria border at the weekend.

The inflatable was being towed by a jet ski when it was coming round a bend and smashed into a stationary fishing boat on Lake Mulwala, near Yarrawonga about 11.30am on Sunday, police said.

The incident came as temperatures soared into the 40s over the weekend, with Victorian Surf Life Savers performing a slew of rescues across the state.

Saturday was their busiest day in two decades, with 145 rescues performed.

“In my 20 years plus with this organisation, I don’t remember a day in Victoria we performed that many rescues in a single day,” Kane Treloar, director of lifesaving services at Life Saving Victoria, said.

“We don’t remember a day where we’ve been that busy.”

Temperatures in Victoria are set to ease on Monday, with the state expecting patchy rain and showers.
