Tyers axe attack: Manhunt after brutal assault leaves three people critically injured in Victoria

Police have launched a manhunt after a horrific axe attack has left three people with life-threatening and critical injuries in Gippsland, Victoria.

It is believed the attacker attended an address on Cowies Road in Tyers, east of Melbourne, at about 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

Victoria Police say the man, who is in his 50s, used an axe to assault an elderly man and woman, as well as another man.

The attacker then fled the scene, according to police, when the victims called emergency services to the property.

“The elderly male and second man are expected to be airlifted to hospital in Melbourne with life-threatening injuries,” a police statement said.

“The elderly woman also sustained critical injuries and was taken to hospital.”

Police have launched a large-scale search in the area for the man, who they say absconded on foot.

The man was last seen wearing a mustard yellow and black jacket and black backpack.

“He may be armed with an axe and handsaw,” the police statement said.

Police have warned the public not to approach the man, and to immediately contact 000 if he is sighted.
