Victorian commuters set to pay more for public transport fares

Public transport users in Victoria are set to fork out more money when they catch a tram, bus, or train in the new year, after Transport Victoria announced a major fare increase.
The increase, which will come into effect on January 1 2026, will add 40 cents to the full daily cap for Zone 1, Zone 1+2 metropolitan fares and the regional fare cap.

By continuing you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy.Commuters will now pay $11.40 for a daily full fare cap, up from $11, for trips across zones 1 and 2, and will sit at $7.20 for fares across zone 2 only.
For concessions, the daily fare cap will jump to $5.70 for zones 1 and 2.
On weekends or public holidays, daily fares will increase to $8.00 or $4.00 for concessions.

According to an announcement by Transport Victoria, the fare change is part of a yearly review and is applied across the state.
“Fares are reviewed each year and adjusted as needed, with changes applied statewide, ensuring equity for all Victorians,”
“Public transport fares contribute to the operation of our train, tram and bus network” the announcement said.
