Two men have been stabbed in a frightening incident at a busy Melbourne shopping centre.

Police say a man attacked two others with a broken bottle inside the Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre in Mulgrave about 2pm local time.

Passersby intervened to subdue the man until police arrived.

“It is alleged the man stabbed two people before he was apprehended by witnesses until police arrived,” police wrote in a statement.

The alleged victims, a 62-year-old and a 35-year-old, suffered minor injuries. The older man was rushed to hospital while the younger man received treatment at the scene.

A man in his 30s has been taken into custody. No charges have been laid.
