The man had just left the hospital on Kangan Dr in Berwick, in Melbourne’s southeast, just moments before the incident happened about 10.45am, police said.

The woman, from Upper Beaconsfield, tried to stop him from driving off in her car but was hit by the moving vehicle.

She was rushed to a Melbourne hospital in a critical condition.

The man drove off in the car.

A 25-year-old man of no fixed address was later arrested in Pioneer Bay, while the woman’s Ford was found nearby.

He was charged with theft of motor vehicle, dangerous driving causing serious injury, unlicensed driving, reckless conduct endangering life, and failing to render assistance.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
