A witness has recounted the terrifying moment a church was swarmed by rioters after a Bishop was allegedly stabbed during a Monday night mass.

The witness, who did not wish to be named, said about 4000 people swarmed the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley after the bishop — Mar Mari Emmanuel — was allegedly stabbed.

He claimed that after the alleged stabbing, between 10 and 15 people tried to kill the man who attacked the beloved bishop.

The witness said police responded by attempting to shield the man by deploying pepper spray.

At about 11.32pm, the Christ the Good Shepherd car park was being heavily guarded by police.

The witness said people began throwing sticks and rocks at police vehicles and started trying to ignite as well as let down the tyres of the cars.

Broken glass and caution tape lay on the street outside the church.
