A construction worker has been killed when he was struck by an excavator at a roadworks site in Perth’s northern suburbs.

The incident happened just before midday at the southbound exit of the Mitchell Fwy to Warwick Rd in Greenwood.

“The man was reported to have been struck by a piece of equipment that fell,” WorkSafe said.

The 35-year-old labourer sustained serious head injuries and was taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital where he died a short time later, according to The West Australian.

The WA branch of the CFMEU said it was the 10th fatality at a construction site in the state this year.

“Our investigations have only just begun,” the union said.

“We know that the incident involved an excavator and lifting equipment (but) we’re not going to speculate on the tragic circumstances until we have the facts.

“All we know is that a worker tragically did not return home today.”

The offramp was closed to motorists for six hours, with emergency services at the scene, before being reopened about 6pm.

WorkSafe investigators are now working out how the fatal incident unfolded “with a view to ensuring compliance and preventing future incidents of a similar nature”.

WorkSafe Commissioner Sally North said work-related deaths were a tragedy and offered her condolences to the man’s loved ones.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
