Narrogin bushfire: Blaze downgraded to advice as firefighters contain bushfire

Firefighters have contained an out-of-control bushfire that was moving towards Narrogin with authorities downgrading the warning level to advice.

The blaze was approaching Narrogin with authorities telling residents west of the town to prepare to leave at 4.04pm.

The watch and act alert covered people in the area bound by Clayton, Wiese, Congelin-Narrogin, and Spouse roads in Narrogin and Minigin.

An advice warning is now in place for the same area with authorities advising residents to avoid the area at 7.58pm.

The fire was first reported at 10.11am on Thursday and is believed to have been sparked by lightning.

The fire continues to move in a south easterly direction but has been contained with firefighters now mopping up and strengthening containment lines.

It has burnt at least 10ha.

A number of roads have been closed including Clayton Road.

Aerial support was sent to assist ground crews but have been released as they cannot operate on the dark.

The Shire of Narrogin is managing the incident.

WHAT TO DO

  • Continue to stay alert and monitor your surroundings.
  • Watch for signs of a bushfire, especially smoke and flames.
  • Be aware of other potential dangers such as falling trees and damaged properties and infrastructure.
  • Close all doors and windows and stay inside if smoke is causing you concern.

If driving

  • Turn your headlights on and drive slowly.
  • Watch for emergency services personnel and follow their directions.
  • If you cannot see clearly, pull over, keep your headlights and hazard lights on, and wait until the smoke clears.
