But Davies has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental impairment to several charges, including sexual penetration of a child and impeding a person’s breathing.

The apprentice chef claims he was suffering from psychotic symptoms and unable to control himself.

Lawyers for the accused will call medical experts to back up that claim.

The young girl’s police interview was played to the WA District Court on Tuesday

Through tears, she told police “either I had a nightmare last night or it was real”.

During Davies’ police interview, which was also played, he told officers he “liked to play pretend and slink around in the dark”.

He admitted to the opportunistic attack, saying he climbed through an open bathroom window.

He found the girl’s bedroom and put his hand over her mouth, using sticky tape to seal it.

“The intent was evil and selfish,” he told officers.

“I don’t even know why the f*** I did it. I saw how distraught she was.”

The trial continues.
