A man has drowned at a popular beach in Perth’s northern suburbs.

It is believed he had been swimming alone at Scarborough before he was spotted floating in the water just after 2pm.

Police say the man was unconscious when he was pulled from the water.

Despite desperate efforts, he could not be saved.

Witness Sam Richel told 7NEWS the victim was provided CPR for a “really long” time.

“Then the white sheet came out. It was pretty scary,” he said.

Another witness said he was relaxing on the beach when the man behind him yelled that someone was drowning.

“We saw something floating. We wanted to call the life savers but they already knew what was happening,” Adryen Marchal said.

“Two of them took the rescue paddle to take the man out of the water and then they (brought) him back to the beach.

“I tried not to look because it was a bit shocking.”
