The family of a man fighting for his life after he was allegedly run down and bashed with a hammer have spoken out to thank first responders and members of the public for acting quickly to save his life.

Trae Black, 29, remains in a critical condition in intensive care at Royal Perth Hospital following the bloody dispute in City Beach on Monday.

“Trae is being supported by friends and family, for which we are very grateful,” his father Troy Black told 7NEWS.

“Although Trae has a long way to go, we know he will fight hard to overcome his injuries.”

Black’s lower right leg was severed when he was run over by a silver Mazda BT-50 ute and then hit in the head with a hammer by a colleague about 11.20am, police have alleged.

Emergency services were quick to the scene on West Coast Hwy, where members of the public, including an off-duty doctor, were already providing life-saving first aid.

“We would like to thank those people at the scene who went to his aid and the first responders,” Troy Black said.

“It’s our understanding that if it had not been for their intervention, Trae would have died before reaching the hospital.

“We would also like to thank the staff at RPH for the outstanding care that they are giving Trae, and for supporting our family.

“The past few days have been extremely difficult on those of us who are close to Trae, and we now ask for space and privacy so can concentrate on Trae and the difficult journey he has ahead of him.”

He refused to seek legal advice before pleading guilty during his first appearance in Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

“You would appreciate this is an exceptionally serious charge and I suggest it would be prudent to get some legal advice this morning because this matter carries a significant prison term,” Magistrate Janelle Scutt said.

Lawson did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on August 21.
