A West Australian police officer has been hospitalised after a being attacked by a dog during a violent arrest of the pet’s owner in Perth’s southern suburbs on Saturday.

Police were called to the Canning Vale residence over a disturbance about 3.50pm, where a 23-year-old man was then arrested and charged with assaulting and obstructing public officers.

During the arrest, a dog approached the arresting officers “and attacked a male police officer,” Western Australia Police said.

“Police attempted to stop the attack using non-lethal forces, which were unsuccessful.”

One of the officers then fatally shot the dog, which died at the scene.

The injured police officer was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital in an ambulance.

The 23-year-old man is due to appear at Armadale Magistrates Court on October 11.

An investigation is ongoing.
