A 21st birthday ends in tragedy, with an accused gatecrasher rushed to hospital.

A woman remains in a serious condition after she allegedly attempted to gatecrash a 21st birthday party in Victoria over the Easter weekend.

The 45-year-old allegedly tried to enter the party at the venue Ebb and Flow in Barwon Heads with a group of other women on Saturday at 11pm only to be involved in a physical altercation.

It is alleged bottles were thrown inside the venue during the fight and the woman was airlifted to hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

7NEWS understands the woman celebrating her birthday was a years-long employee of the venue.

A 55-year-old man was taken to hospital under police guard and has since been interviewed by detectives and released pending summons.

The mother of the young woman said the party had been peaceful, before the gatecrashers had shown up.
