Supermarket giant Woolworths is expanding its digital trolley rollout to dozens of stores across several states, changing the way thousands of customers can shop.

The Scan&Go trolleys were first introduced to 10 supermarkets across NSW in August last year, giving shoppers the chance to scan and bag their goods as they go, tracking their spending as they shop.

Customers with an Everyday Rewards card can unlock a tablet-style device from the wall at the front of the supermarket, which attaches to their trolley and can be used while shopping.

Shoppers can then take their items to the self-serve checkout, pay and leave.

The devices proved a success in NSW stores at Kellyville, Kellyville Grove, Kellyville North, Lane Cove, North Parramatta, Oran Park, Schofields Town Centre, The Ponds, Warringah Mall, and Windsor.

Shoppers had mixed reactions replying to a post from Woolworths on social media: “This makes me angry why are people willingly doing this”, but others felt they were missing out: “Where’s this we don’t have that in Perth 😢”.

The supermarket giant has now announced it will be adding the Scan&Go trolleys to an additional 25 supermarkets, expanding into Victoria and Queensland.

In NSW, the Scan&Go trolleys will be rolled out to supermarkets in Neutral Bay Village, Richmond, Menai, Mortdale, Revesby, Hornsby, Rutherford, Kotara, Green Hills and Erina.

In Victoria, the trolleys will be installed in supermarkets at Chirnside Park, Malvern, Mornington East, Rye, St Helena and Thrift Park.

Scan&Go will also be added to the Woolworths in Moonee Ponds in September.

In Queensland, the trolleys will roll out across supermarkets in Burleigh Heads, Caloundra, Capalaba Park, Currimundi, Nambour, Noosa, North Lakes and Warner.

Woolworths360 managing director Rob McCartney said the initial trial of the Scan&Go trolleys proved a success, prompting the expansion interstate.

“After the initial rollout to 10 stores across NSW, customers have told us using the Scan&Go Trolley has resulted in a faster and more convenient shopping experience,” Mr MCartney said.

“We have noticed that over 70 per cent of Scan&Go Trolley users are repeat customers, which supports our expansion into Victoria and Queensland respectively.

“To add, young families in particular have told us Scan&Go Trolley is helping them balance their budget, as they can track their spending in real time.”
