A man has been crushed to death while emptying recycling bins in Melbourne.

The 28-year-old was working on the recycling truck in when he stopped to collect a bin from a site in Pakenham about 10am on Friday.

The man, who was working alone, had jumped out of the truck and attempted to empty the bin when he became caught.

“WorkSafe is investigating the death of a truck driver during the collection of documents for secure disposal at a property in Pakenham on Friday,” WorkSafe Victoria said.

“It is believed the 28-year-old man was working alone attempting to empty a bin when he became entangled in a lifting mechanism and was crushed inside the back of the truck.”

He is the 44th confirmed workplace fatality in 2024.
