A parliamentary inquiry into artificial intelligence hears testimony from major US tech companies including Anthropic, Microsoft, Google and OpenAI following an earlier breach of Medicare data.

Artificial intelligence pioneer Anthropic is set to list on the US share market in a bid to raise funds after posting an operating loss of $US693 million ($983 million) over the first half of 2026.

The five-year-old company builds AI models, platforms, agents, and an application named Claude, which it largely sells to corporates to help them cut costs or grow sales.

Its accounting or net loss over the first half of 2026 reached a giant $US80.7 billion largely due a $US72.4 billion change in the value of debt it has outstanding.

Revenue for the half-year period between June 30, 2025 and June 30, 2026 soared around 14-fold from $US1.16 billion to $US16.3 billion.

Anthropic’s chief executive Dario Amodei co-founded the company in 2021 after he and a small group of researchers defected from rival ChatGPT developer OpenAI.

The company is seeking to raise an unspecified amount from new equity investors at a valuation between $US1.5 trillion to $US2 trillion.

Mr Amodei said there are four things that he wants any investor in Anthropic to understand.

“The incredible potenial of AI, the risks we must address, Anthropic’s unique approach to building a company and operating in the world, and the ways in which our behviour may differ from that of a purely profit-maximising company.”

As the leader in cutting edge AI development the company has been at the heart of warnings that the technology may spiral out of control and prove dangerous to humanity.

Its prospectus filled with the US regulator the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday, again warned on the safety risks around AI.

More to come.
