Major concerts like Lady Gaga remain a real drawcard for interstate travel, with fresh figures revealing more than a third of Australians are crossing State borders each year to attend big events.

The Tourism and Transport Forum, the peak body for businesses in the tourism, transport and aviation sectors, said Australians were willing to travel for the “moments that matter” and big events continued to draw people across the country.

The 25 to 34-year-old age group leads this trend, with 51 per cent saying they travel interstate for events annually, closely followed by 18 to 24-year-olds. Men are somewhat more likely to travel for events than women.

It comes as bookings for hotels and interstate flights jumped in Sydney ahead of American singer Lady Gaga’s two shows in the capital this weekend.

Australia’s biggest hotel operator Accor reported its hotels in Sydney CBD were at 92 per cent occupancy on Friday and 85 per cent on Saturday.

“Artists like Lady Gaga don’t just sell tickets, they spark movement,” TTF chief executive Margy Osmond said.

“Their performances inspire fans to travel, to connect, and to be part of an unforgettable shared experience.”

Accor Pacific chief operating officer Adrian Williams said the hospitality sector thrived when global stars performed in Australia.

“(Lady Gaga’s) performances in Melbourne and Brisbane sparked exceptional demand, and Sydney is now experiencing the same uplift as fans arrive for her shows at Accor Stadium,” he said.
