Sydney mine collapse: Three injured in explosion at Appin West Colliery at Douglas Park

Three men have been injured in a frightening mine collapse near Sydney, with two of the miners trapped in rubble for almost an hour.

Three men have been injured following an explosion at a mine south-west of Sydney that trapped two men in rubble for almost an hour.

Emergency services were called at 3am amid reports an explosion had caused a partial roof collapse inside the mine.

Sunrise reports that one man was thrown up to three metres and was buried in rubble.

He managed to free himself but two others were trapped up to chest height by the collapse.

Emergency crews worked for 40 minutes to clear the rubble and rescue the trapped miners.

The first man, who managed to free himself, was taken to Liverpool Hospital. The other two men were taken to Wollongong Hospital.

All three men are understood to be in a stable condition.

An investigation is underway into the collapse.
