Amazon Australia is ramping up its status as a threat to local retailers as the tech behemoth banks nearly another $1 billion in sales.
Latest accounts filed with the corporate regulator show Amazon recorded total sales of $4.77b in 2025, up from $3.81b in 2024. It recorded a net income of $21.8 million in 2025, up from $3.6m in the previous year.
Since launching in Australia in December 2017, Amazon has increasingly taken on supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths — selling goods like groceries, health and beauty products and beauty supplies — as well as other retailers like Kmart, Target and Big W.

WA conglomerate Wesfarmers in January 2025 called time on its loss-making online marketplace Catch after failed efforts to turn a profit amid growing competition from offshore behemoths like Amazon, Shein and Temu.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced it would distribute and deliver fresh groceries in Australia for the first time after striking a partnership with Harris Farm Markets, a primarily NSW-focused supermarket chain that is privately-held and family-owned.
According to a recent report from e-commerce and marketplace group Pattern, Amazon has grown its customer base by 3.45 per cent year-on-year to now reach 60 per cent of Australian shoppers.
When asked about the company’s performance, an Amazon spokesman on Monday said its customers continued to place their trust on the retailer.
He said the Seattle-headquartered company had invested more than $35b locally since 2011.
“These investments have strengthened our offering for Aussie customers, helped us deliver faster than ever before and continued to support the more than 14,000 Australian businesses that sell on our stores,” the spokesman said.
Amazon was founded in 1994 by tech titan Jeff Bezos in a garage space in his rental home at the time. The company was initially an online marketplace for books. Today, Amazon sells more than 200 million products across over 30 categories.
The financial accounts revealed sales for its online store jumped from just under $2b in 2024 to $2.3b in 2025.
It also posted growth in what it described as its “subscription services”, such as Amazon Prime, which boasts more than 200 million subscribers globally.
Customers can get free one-day delivery on items such as electronic equipment, fashion and home accessories.
It also offers a Netflix-style streaming system called Prime Video — where teen drama television series The Summer I Turned Pretty became one of its most popular shows — as well as music and an online book library called Audible.
Subscription services sales grew to nearly $633m in 2025 from $480m.
Third-party seller sales have cracked the billion dollar barrier, hitting $1.14b in 2025, from $839m.
