The Hollywood superstar has announced she is stepping back from public life for the remainder of the year to focus on her family.

After spending 2026 almost impossible to escape, Anne Hathaway is about to make herself very hard to find.

The Hollywood star has announced she is stepping away from the spotlight after an extraordinary year that saw her appear in five films, joking that she plans to simply “vanish” now that her final release has hit cinemas.

Hathaway followed through on that promise on October 2, when she shared a playful video marking the release of her psychological thriller Verity.

The clip begins with Hathaway preparing to head to the film’s premiere before explaining what she plans to do the following day.

But before she can finish, she suddenly disappears from the frame.

A member of her team walks in looking for the actress before mock headlines flash across the screen announcing her mysterious disappearance.

“Thank you everyone for your support, and for making this an incredible, unforgettable year,” Hathaway wrote alongside the video.

‘I’m going to vanish’

The stunt was not entirely unexpected.

Hathaway had already warned fans during the Verity press tour that once the movie arrived in cinemas, she was planning to disappear from public view.

“The movie comes out October 2 and on October 3 I’m going to, like, vanish in a plume of smoke and you’re not gonna see me until you have to,” she told Entertainment Tonight in September.

“I’m definitely gonna disappear and take some time off.”

And after the year Hathaway has had, it is not difficult to understand why.

The 43-year-old New York actress has starred in a staggering five films in 2026, including The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, Mother Mary, The End of Oak Street and Verity.

The relentless release schedule has also meant months of premieres, interviews, red carpets and promotional appearances for the Oscar winner.

At the New York premiere of Verity, Hathaway acknowledged just how unusual her year had been.

“Five is a lot,” she told Vogue.

Hathaway stressed that “everything has not been effortless” and credited the team surrounding her for helping her navigate the mammoth year.

“There’s been an army of people behind me at every step, and I’m just really lucky,” she said.

When will Anne Hathaway return?

Fans need not panic about Hathaway’s disappearing act just yet.

The break is temporary, and the actress has already given a strong indication of when Hollywood will see her again.

Hathaway has said she plans to remain out of the spotlight until March 2027, when she is expected to join Tom Cruise for the next Days of Thunder movie.

“This year has all been really amazing,” Hathaway told Vogue while reflecting on her packed schedule.

“For most actors, we are lucky to get one film a year, but to have a year that’s been ridiculously overly blessed, I’m appreciating every second of it.”

Her temporary exit comes as Verity, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller, becomes her fifth and final film release of the year.

The movie stars Hathaway as bestselling author Verity Crawford alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.

But for Hathaway, its arrival marks more than another movie premiere.

It is also her cue to disappear.

After five movies, countless red carpets and almost an entire year in the Hollywood spotlight, Hathaway is finally taking herself off the schedule.

At least until March.
