Julie Andrews makes surprise announcement about Princess Diaries 3 while promoting book Shy with daughter Emma

Dame Julie Andrews has made a surprising announcement about The Princess Diaries, sending the internet into a spin.

In a phone interview with US outlet Today promoting her new children’s book with daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, the 90-year-old revealed some shocking news.

The pair have released 35 picture books together.

Their latest, Shy, is about a singing poodle, an ode to poodles the pair have had over their lives, several of whom Dame Julie sang to in preparation for film and theatre roles.

One of those was named Shy, the namesake of the new book.

“I almost to this day don’t quite know whether some vibration bothered her ears or whether she just loved the music,” Dame Julie said of the pet she had in the 1950s.

“But she was very, very sweet that way, and that’s how the story came about.”

In the chat, she also spoke about the upcoming Disney documentary which will be released in 2027, directed by R.J. Cutler.

“I’m a little nervous,” Dame Julie said.

“But I figure at this age of mine now, it’s probably the time to have agreed to do it.”

She said the documentary about her life was still in the editing phase and she had not yet seen a cut of it.

But it was one particular comment from Dame Julie that sent the internet in a spin.

When she was asked about Princess Diaries 3, which Anne Hathaway has confirmed will be happening, she had a quick and surprise response.

“I’m not going to be in it,” she said.

“I think the story is slightly different, and I’m not quite sure how they’re dealing with that.

“But it’s too late for me to do it.

“I think the story has to continue in Princess Mia.

“It’s her story. It’s not really mine.”

On social media, fans expressed their disappointment that she would not appear in the film.

“Yeah I’m sorry they can go ahead and cancel the movie,” wrote one commenter.

“I love Anne; God knows I do!!!! But Julie Andrews is the essence of the movie! added another.

Dame Julie played Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Princess Mia’s grandmother, in the first two installations of the film.

The 90-year-old told InStyle that she “passed” on being involved in the third film.

“I think I’m retired, really, would be about the best description for that,” she said.

“(The film’s creative team) asked me all last year if I would be keen to do it.

“It was very, very hard to say ‘no,’ but I did because I thought I had a wonderful ride, and this one I felt would flourish very well and wouldn’t need Granny going in there at my age.”
