Coachella attendees were left stunned Saturday night when a rogue firework misfired during Green Day’s set, flying into the crowd and setting a nearby palm tree ablaze.

The incident occurred as Green Day wrapped up their headlining performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California.

While most fireworks exploded harmlessly overhead, one veered off course, causing chaos among festivalgoers.

“A firework just exploded next to me and all my friends at Coachella,” one concertgoer wrote on X.

“I can’t hear out of my right ear, multiple people hurt. That was f***ing insane, I thought it was a terrorist attack.”

Footage shared online shows the palm tree engulfed in flames as firefighters rushed to extinguish the fire. Event organisers could be heard shouting, “Everybody out please,” as they evacuated the area.

Green Day’s performance marked their first official appearance at Coachella and included hits like Holiday and American Idiot.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong also made headlines for tweaking lyrics to criticise President Donald Trump, singing, “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda,” instead of the original line from American Idiot.

Despite the scare, Green Day’s set continued after the fire was contained. The band’s explosive debut at the festival was otherwise celebrated for its high-energy performance and career-spanning set list.

The festival continues next weekend with performances by Lady Gaga, Post Malone, and Travis Scott among others.
